The family that slays together, stays together.

At least that’s the case for the Cullen brood.

In “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” which hits theaters June 30, Seattle is ravaged by a series of killings caused by an army of newborn vampires controlled by revenge-seeking bloodsucker Victoria. To combat the threat against Bella ( Kristen Stewart) in this third installment of the franchise, the Cullens must band together and join forces with their sworn enemies, the wolf pack.

“The whole family is in a vulnerable position because of the love we have for Bella,” said Elizabeth Reaser, who plays matriarch Esme Cullen. “If she’s not OK, we’re not OK.”

In the past, we’ve seen the clan hit baseballs so hard that they can play only in a thunder storm, to block out the sound. And we’ve watched the buttoned-up human imposters welcome Bella into their home as the human girlfriend of one of their own — the handsome Edward.

“This time around, you get to see their true vampire-ness,” said Peter Facinelli, who plays head vampire Dr. Carlisle Cullen in the series based on the bestselling books by Stephenie Meyer.

What can we expect from the pale-faced Cullen family (which includes the Hale siblings) this go around? Here’s what the actors say audiences can expect from the story and their characters:

Facinelli: “For me, as Carlisle, it’s an exciting portion of the series. Carlisle is very compassionate and he has a lot of killing to do in this movie. I joke, after he kills the bad guys, he says he’s sorry in his head. And, you know, he’s calm and level-headed. He’s the rock of the family. He usually has a lot of information to draw from because Alice can see into the future and Edward can read minds. In this third movie, he’s not getting that information. Neither one of his sources are working, so he’s kind of flying blind.”

Reaser: “Esme is still a vampire. She still wants to kill people all day long. It was interesting to get in touch with the vampire side of her in ways that haven’t really been explored. Her family is in danger and that brings out the mama bear in her.

Ashley Greene (as Alice Cullen): “Yeah, she’s delicate and prissy at times, but Alice gets a little edgier with each installment. And with these vampires messing with her family and the people she loves, you’re going to see a bit of her toughness. It’s a reminder to the audience that even though we restrain ourselves at times, we’re still vampires and we’re dangerous. You’re going to see the dark, dangerous side of Alice.”

Kellan Lutz (as Emmett Cullen): “You’re going to see a smile on Emmett’s face from start to finish. He just loves to fight. And there’s a lot of fighting. He sort of plays bigger in this one than the others.”

Jackson Rathbone (as Jasper Hale): “You’ll get to see a little bit of the root of what makes Jasper so withdrawn and quiet in the Cullen family. Fans will get some of Jasper’s back story in ‘Eclipse.’ I got to wear the whole Civil War gear and everything. There’s a bit of the softer and darker side of Jasper in this film.”

Nikki Reed (as Rosalie Hale): “You see a reason for her attitude. I think fans will feel for her. There was a bit of that in ‘New Moon.’ Fans got to see a bit of her sensitive side. Her sane side. Her logical side. And her desire to help her family. This time around, she is much more of a participant. She’s a survivor. This is her family. So if protecting Bella means protecting her family, she’s going to do it.”

Robert Pattinson (as Edward Cullen): Snagging a phone interview with the brooding dreamboat — who was overseas shooting his latest film, “Bel Ami” — proved difficult. So what can we expect from the lovesick Edward? He promises to love Bella “every moment of forever,” as the trailer reveals. He’s still hesitant about her becoming a vampire. He’s determined to protect her from Victoria. And he’s vying with Jacob for her affections. Oh, the life of an antique teenage vampire.

Right now you want to be Jackson Rathbone. The actor is on a serious, serious roll. He plays Jasper Hale in the blockbuster Twilight series and has The Twilight Saga: Eclipse on the way later this year. He co-stars in the much-anticipated fantasy-adventure The Last Airbender (2010), due out this summer, in Girlfriend (2010), an indie drama he also co-produced, and in a very creepy little horror film called Dread (2010), just released on DVD from Lionsgate. Based on a Clive Barker short story, the film casts Rathbone as Stephen, a college student who partners up with Cheryl (Laura Donnelly) and Quaid (Shaun Evans) on a project that chronicles people’s greatest fears. However, Quaid pushes matters to the extreme, forcing Stephen and Cheryl to confront their own fears far more personally and viscerally than they ever imagined. ScreenStar caught up with Rathbone as he and his band 100 Monkeys — yes, he’s a musician, too; check ‘em out at 100monkeysmusic.com — made their way toward New Orleans for a concert there, part of the group’s ambitious 100-city tour. Dread was the main topic of discussion, but the amiable Rathbone talked about some other subjects of interest as well.

Let’s start with Dread. Had you read the Barker short story on which the film is based?

I read the short story when I first got hooked up with the script because I wanted to see what the adaptation was from. I read the script and then the short story, and I was amazed at what (writer-director) Anthony DiBlasi was able to pull out and what he was able to create from the short story. Obviously, certain things have changed, but he kept the heart of it and expanded on it.

What did you like about your character, Stephen?

I’ve always loved characters that have a lot of development and grow over the course of however long the story is. It’s about a month in this, and he really gets to go from being this shy pariah to being more outgoing and to going out to nightclubs with Quaid and to discovering more about himself through other people’s dreads and fears. And he fully realizes his own fears and dreads through Quaid’s demented personality.

The film does a nice job of delivering a plot that makes you think as well as giving us chills, gross-out moments, and characters to care about. What did you make of the mix of elements?

I think what Anthony did, from adapting it to filming it to cutting it together in the editing room, was to create this film that’s more of a psychological thriller than a horror film. It does have those horrific elements to it, but at the end of the day it’s more of a person-to-person drama. And it’s beautiful to be a part of that. This is a horror story that could happen. It’s the horrors of day-to-day life, of the dark sides of our own psyches.

A lot of people are very excited about The Last Airbender. How did that shoot go?

We shot for two weeks in Greenland, which was freezing — freezing — but beautiful. You really can’t fake that. I did a month and a half of kung fu training in Los Angeles. And then I flew out to Philadelphia for another half a month of training, rehearsals, fittings and tests and everything. We were actually in Greenland for our first two weeks of shooting, then flew back to Philly for the rest of the film. It was a great experience.

Probably even more people are excited about The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. What will we see of Jasper in the next film?

We get to see a lot of his back story, which is what I’m really excited about putting out there. It’s back in the Civil War era. You see him turned into a vampire. Back when he was a human he was in the Civil War and he runs across these vampires — three beautiful women vampires — in the desert, and they turn him. And he becomes a warrior who trains these vampire armies. We see a lot of that and see a lot of Jasper’s back story, which is really cool because in Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon you could kind of see that he’s still dealing with this new way of life, especially now that his adoptive brother (Robert Pattinson) is dating a human (Kristen Stewart). And in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse you get to see why.

You seem so busy with the acting right now. You’ve produced Girlfriend and are trying to get that on the festival circuit in order to find a distributor. How concerned do you get about leaving enough time to devote to your band, 100 Monkeys?

It all depends on how many hours of sleep you want to get a night (laughs). When we did Eclipse I was filming it in Vancouver and flying to Boston on my off days to shoot Girlfriend, as well as mixing my band’s album and recording vocals for it. So I was doing three or four different things at once. It was two months of doing that. It was difficult, but at the end of the day you just sleep a little less and drink a lot more coffee.

Nikki: The Cullens aren’t really in ‘New Moon’ as I’m sure you guys know because of the books and Chris Weitz making it very clear that we’re going to stick to the storyline. So, we’re not really in ‘New Moon’ all that much, but I did have an opportunity in the voting scene to show a different aspect of her personality, just because we were sort of setting up for ‘Eclipse’, because that’s really my opportunity to explore Rosalie as a character. So I guess, I guess in the voting scene, I worked really close with Chris to make sure that the speech that I give conveys exactly what I want it to. I don’t know if that answers your question, I’m sorry.
[No, no; yeah.]

Nikki: It’s been a long day. I think that when you have eight hundred pages in a book you have the time to explore each character, and so although Stephenie didn’t write one –dimensional characters, I mean all of our characters are very full and colorful; when you’re trying to execute that in a screenplay it can be really difficult because they have to focus on the love story between Bella and Edward. So in ‘Twilight’, you know, Rosalie was written, I guess the few opportunities I had to be on screen I was angry or bitchy and I don’t think that that’s what Rosalie is. So I’ve been trying my best to incorporate other aspects of her personality.

Q. Following up on what you said about incorporating the different aspects of her personality, where do you find your inspiration to portray a character that is in some senses somewhat of an unlikeable character, but she has that other you know, really human side to her? Where do you find your inspiration to bring out some of that from?

Nikki: I think, I guess years of exploring my own personality in terms of understanding that most of the time anger is actually just a way to hide insecurities or you know, fear or sadness. And so I knew, I knew immediately sort of where Rosalie was coming from and I also have two siblings that I’m very protective of, two brothers. So I guess it sort of stems from that.”

Kellan: Football, sport in general. Although I have a lot of female friends who are into football just as much as me, that’s why I love hanging out with the girls, they get so into it and that’s sexy to me.
Jackson: I can’t clean. I really can’t, I’m not very good at it, I’m actually a poor cleaner. My level of cleanliness is far below most, I wear the same pants every day, I get at least 2-3 wearings out of my socks. Not in a row – they sit in my dirty pile.
Ashley: My dog is spoilt, I buy him clothes. I love girl movies and girl wine. I definitely get very excited over clothes, like really excited.

What’s the gender cliché you go against?
Nikki: I like clothes if I’m handed them, I don’t like shopping. I get bored really easily, like having to go through things and looking through racks. I’d much rather eat than shop.
Kellan: I am the worst at packing. If I’m going to the beach, it’ll take me like an hour to pack my stuff like my towels, bathing suits and games.
Jackson: I’m not into sports. I used to play a lot of baseball as a kid but I’ve never followed it I was always much more into art.
Ashley: I’m a real college football girl and I like hockey games. They’re really brutal but I enjoy them. I was a tomboy when I was growing up, I climbed trees and stuff.

Ashley: I ask Kellan a lot about guys because he’s honest with me and she’s new but Bryce Dallas Howard is really nurturing and kind of motherly.
Jackson: Peter Facinelli. He’s got a wife, kids, beautiful home. That’s gorgeous. Someday hopefully, I’m taking tips from him.
